Peripheral (2022 - )
Peripheral is an ongoing series of paper weavings that represents the fragile, often fragmented memories that linger on the edges of our awareness— the stories that we hold just outside the reach of our conscious mind.
I drew inspiration from two distinct sources of imagery: photography of America's "Painted Ladies"—the iconic Victorian-era homes that stand as symbols of grandeur and nostalgia—and nature photography from the era of my own early childhood, the late '90s and early 2000s.
I chose the grand Victorian houses to represent the child’s first conception of home. As children, we encounter the world around us as larger-than-life, full of new sights, sounds, and sensations. Our first homes, in this sense, are lavish and filled with color, even though we can barely comprehend the scale of their presence.
In contrast, I weave these pictures with images of nature to reflect the erosion of our earliest memories. Just as the natural world undergoes constant change, our brains, too, slowly erase the vivid, conscious mental images of our childhood. The memory of home, once so immediate and tangible, becomes buried deeper within us, existing now only at the periphery of our awareness.
